Port Huron Board of Education Approves Layoff List
May 22nd, 2012
Some 50 people attended the Port Huron Board of Education meeting last night, at which the board approved a layoff list of 23 teachers. Port Huron Education Association President Michele Shagena remarked, prior to the vote that the teacher evaluations did not follow the same standards from building to building in particular when determining how to measure student growth. In the past, a layoff was based on seniority, rather than on performance or their evaluations which are largely based on student growth. Plans for some the district’s bond were approved on several contracts for building improvements and updating equipment. Board members also approved a vote for the district to begin negotiations to become the chartering agency for the St. Clair County Intervention Academy. The board will vote on the contract at its June meeting. The Regional Educational Service Agency has been serving as the academy’s chartering agency since 2004.
